PeopleSpace

Starting a Startup Community in Orange County

A blog about our stories

Here at PeopleSpace we believe that people, and their stories, are the best part of being a member of our Community.

So we wanted to reopen this blog to create a space where those stories can be shared – and therefore inspire more startup entrepreneurs, programmers, marketers.

We will start from the very beginning of PeopleSpace’s story: how the project was born and why.

“My Journey and Why PeopleSpace”: watch the video

In this video, Melinda Pang Kim, our Executive Director, tells her journey about the creation of PeopleSpace and her thoughts on community and startups in Orange County.

Next we will tell our members’ stories and the life of PeopleSpace’s Community.

If you want to share your story, please email us!

PeopleSpace Pre-Accelerator kicked off Pack #2!

March 12, 2016 by melinda

pre-accelerator

Last Thursday, we kicked off Pack #2 of our PeopleSpace Pre-Accelerator Program!

As a tech hub and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we have continually held workshops, hackathons and roundtable discussions to educate the public on the latest technologies and to be a resource for the next generation of entrepreneurs. After months of planning and reiterations, we are excited to renew this program for early stage startups!

This 9-week program is tailored for technical entrepreneurs & teams who have built a product or service, but need the necessary connections and practical product focused skills to jump to the next milestone. Every Thursday at 6:30pm, we bring together entrepreneurs/mentors from accelerators such as 500 startups to help our startups.

The mentoring and practical applications our founders receive will push them and their startup through to the next level. Each week a new topic will be discussed including Idea Validation, Product, Growth, Customer Acquisition, Analytics, Fundraising, Bootstrapping, and Operations. Learn how to get in front of investors, how to create the best pitch deck for your company, and get the latest insights from those who are succeeding today. The goal of this pre-accelerator is to help build solid companies and introduce them top accelerators in the country.  There will be one chosen startup at the end of every class that will get an interview with #500Startups! If you want to learn more about the program, watch our latest video and visit our website.

APP-O-MOTIVE Hackathon Wrap!

January 23, 2016 by melinda

The last 30 hours or so has been a fun ride for the PeopleSpace team. We hosted our third hackathon, App-o-Motive, to drive the creation of apps to help power the world’s connected cars.
We had a great turnout for the 30 hour event. After prepping with breakfast provided by TractionLabs, Orbee’s CEO Daniel Kim kicked off the event and detailed our special challenge from SpringBoard Auto.

As the teams got to work, it was a great experience for us to see the entire first level of PeopleSpace filled with programmers and creatives working on awesome new concepts. At 4pm, our mentorship team of Laura Knight, Ben Walters, Chad Marciniak, Marvin Chan, and Chris Prijic showed up to work with teams and help polish the ideas that they’d spent all morning working on.
Things really got exciting Sunday morning as the teams presented their work to the judges. The teams created some great ideas focused on solving driving issues with final projects entered ranging from keeping kids safe to helping drivers hook up on the go.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at our winners! Parking Update took first place and CarMon was Runner-up!  Take a look at their projects here: http://buff.ly/1JbyPfJ
Parking Update: Park with Confidence
CarMon: Keep your Car Safe from Thieves

Within the hackathon, SpringBoardAuto sponsored their own challenge and prize.
SpringBoard Auto Challenge Winner: “SpringBoard Auto: Trade-In Tool”

Choosing Your Irvine Office Space

March 16, 2015 by dantman16@gmail.com

There are many factors when it comes to choosing an adequate office space in Irvine to get administrative work (amongst other types of work) done. PeopleSpace, as your coworking space in Orange County, recognizes the need for a place that is conducive to work productivity. The main purpose of an office environment is, after all, to support its occupants in performing their job—preferably at minimum cost and to maximum satisfaction. Consequently, when choosing an office space, it is then of the utmost importance to determine what exactly is conducive to work productivity, what is financially sound, and what is maximally satisfying to one’s company.

Collaboration VS Isolation

Undoubtedly, there are different stances when it comes to office management. Some managerial philosophies favor workers to work in solitude in cubicles. The thinking behind this is that workers will concentrate more since the sights and noises that might result from open workspaces will not be present to such a great degree. Cubicles are suitable for activities which demand medium communication and medium concentration.

Of course, there are also open offices, which are suitable for activities which demand frequent communication or routine activities that need relatively little concentration. Of course, given the right environment of like-minded people, open offices can also aid concentration through giving employees a sense of comradery. Accelerated growth often occurs in collaborative, communal environments, after all. This is why PeopleSpace exists. We support companies by participating in user testing, group learning, warm intros and spreading news with good ol’ fashion word of mouth. Nonetheless, there are also desks and offices for teams that require dedicated spaces.

Coworking with Others

Nonetheless, for those looking to co-work around others, PeopleSpace is an excellent choice. We create an environment wherein people from different companies with common interests in computers, technology, science, art, and entrepreneurship can meet up, socialize and/or collaborate, teach and learn. Coworking is an excellent way to bounce ideas off people who are like-minded yet outside of your company. They are different-minded enough to give you new perspective but have enough common knowledge to make this perspective both relevant and important. Both friendships and business relationships are commonly made through the coworking environment. Many companies have found the business environment at PeopleSpace to be favorable to work productivity, financially affordable, and satisfying overall. Can you go wrong with coffee, Wi-Fi, and collaboration? We think not.

Spatial Considerations

Nonetheless, depending on the size of your company, you may need to acquire a certain amount of space to accommodate all your employees, and the ideal office space for your business may or may not be PeopleSpace. Although we have 15,000 sq. ft. of space waiting for you to get comfortable with, your company might need for space than this. It is then important to not only look for office space that is sizeable enough for your company as it stands right now but sizeable enough for what it will become in the foreseeable future. Moving from office to office might be a necessity, but, if at all possible, one should avoid doing so. Obviously, there is the cost and hassle of moving office equipment and such from Office A to Office B. Depending on the location, employees may or may not be able to commute to work as easily (and some might be turned off by this fact). However, changing addresses has marketing implications. If one has taken search engine optimization efforts in order to rank higher on search engines such as Google and Bing, a change of address means that much of it will need to be done again. Changing office spaces for spatial considerations is sometimes unavoidable, but taking steps to make sure it is not done too often is.

Financial Considerations

Of course, while office space is of the utmost importance, so is staying out of the red. Shopping around for an adequate place to do business in is always a good idea. While the difference in price between two offices per month may not seem to be a big factor, the money that can be saved from choosing a more modest office can adds up quite rapidly over time. This is not to say that choosing the cheapest option possible is the best idea, either. Employees and clients will probably not take to a low-quality office space. However, as with all the other aspects of choosing an office, it remains a consideration. The office that will set up your company for maximum success is, of course, the right one.
